The University of Pennsylvania officially opened the Stephen A. Levin Building with a dedication ceremony on April 14. The six-story, $68.6-million, 78,000-square-foot building integrates psychology, biology and behavioral sciences under one roof with research laboratories, teaching facilities and space for students to collaborate and study. 

Like many people, University of Pennsylvania senior Melanie Murphy uses her smartphone to do a Google search when she’s looking for information, but, now that she knows about the environmental impact of using electronic devices, she thinks twice before doing so. 

The transistor is the most fundamental building block of electronics, used to build circuits capable of amplifying electrical signals or switching them between the 0s and 1s at the heart of digital computation. Transistor fabrication is a highly complex process, however, requiring high-temperature, high-vacuum equipment.

The Fels Policy Research Initiative in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania has announced five inaugural collaborative grants for as much as $15,000 each, designed to further interdisciplinary partnerships. 

The University of Pennsylvania and the National Library of Laos have launched the Digital Library of Northern Thai Manuscripts bringing thousands of ancient manuscripts out of monastic temples and making them available as open source material online.

Al Filreis, an English professor at the University of Pennsylvania, is the recipient of an inaugural Coursera Outstanding Educator Award.

Vanessa Ogle, an assistant professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, has been selected for a 2016-2017 Fellowship from The American Council of Learned Societies.
