It’s spring in Philadelphia, which means it’s time to celebrate science. The Philadelphia Science Festival is back next week for nine days of STEM-filled fun. All told, members of the Penn community will be presenting some 45 talks and activities in 14 venues across the city.

A Google search back in 2013 started things off. Typing in “Philadelphia,” “homeless” and “church,” Ian McCurry, then a freshman in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing, found a way to reach out to a vulnerable community that he could assist and support using his growing knowledge of health care.

It started with lunch. On a spring day in 1988, a small group of women of color on faculty and staff at the University of Pennsylvania met for lunch at the Penn Tower Hotel. They were hosted by Marcia Rafig, the hotel’s general manager, one of the few women of color in high level hotel management positions in the country.

As an immigrant, University of Pennsylvania junior Pamela Fuentes was assisted in her journey to become the first in her family to attend college. Now, she is helping others to access higher education.
