The man police believe shot a Penn student during an abortive carjacking attempt in November has been arrested.

Philadelphia Police Detective Robert Stansfield of the Southwest Detective Bureau obtained a warrant Jan. 7 identifying Keith Schofield, 33, of the 4500 block of Walnut Street as the suspect, and police made the arrest two days later. Schofield, who was to be arraigned Jan. 21, is charged with attempted murder, robbery and related offenses for the Nov. 17 shooting of College senior James McCormack.

McCormack was unloading groceries from his 1997 Ford Taurus on the 4200 block of Pine Street when Schofield allegedly confronted him, and a struggle ensued when McCormack refused to hand over the keys.

University Police Detective Commander Tom King said that Schofield had been the main suspect since the incident, but police wanted to make sure that "they dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's." King said that he was pleased with the cooperation between Penn detectives and the Philadelphia detectives.

The incident has resulted in a redeployment of police and, according to King, they are continuing to modify patrols in the area. A recent attack on a Health System employee in the Penn Tower Hotel has led to increased security measures there as well.
