Get out, get fit, have fun

Penn's Recreation Department is not just for students. Besides running Penn's intramural and club sport programs, the department offers fitness programs and classes for faculty, staff and community residents, young and old alike.

Most of the classes offered by Recreation are full-semester programs, but there are also mini-classes that begin in March. Next month's course offerings include:

  • BALLROOM DANCING: Beginning classes teach the basics of the fox trot, waltz, jitterbug, Polka and Tango. Intermediate classes build on the basics and introduce additional steps, plus the cha-cha. Instructor Carolyn Rollin, an eight-year veteran Penn instructor, has won silver and bronze medals in official ballroom dancing competitions.

Four-week classes begin Wednesday, March 18 and meet every Wednesday. Beginning classes meet from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. and intermediate classes meet from 8:45 to 10 p.m. in the Hutchinson Gym dance studio. Course fees: $20 for Penn students, $45 for all others. It is recommended that students register with a partner.

  • CPR TRAINING: This one-afternoon class provides instruction in adult, child and infant CPR; rescue breathing; automated external defibrillation; and obstructed airway management. Students who successfully complete the course receive American Heart Association CPR certification. Instructor David Zonies (C/G'97), an American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Instructor, is currently a research associate in the Medical School's Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care and has worked for four years as a street paramedic.

Classes will meet Saturday, March 21 and Saturday, March 28. Course fee: $30.

  • GOLF: The course covers all fundamentals: posture, grip and alignment; chipping, pitching and putting; the golf swing; and taking your game to the course. As head coach of the Penn golf team, instructor Francis Vaughan has built an Ivy League championship contender from scratch in four years' time.

Four-week classes begin Tuesday, March 24 or Wednesday, March 25 and meet each week from noon to 1 p.m. at Hill Field. Course fees: $35 for Penn students, $75 for faculty and staff.

  • TENNIS: Classes develop basic skills, including stroke development, racquet control, hand-eye coordination and mobility on the court. Basic rules of the game and strategies are also covered. Instructor Rolando (Al) Luistro, the assistant tennis pro at the Levy Tennis Pavilion, is certified by the U.S. Pro Tennis Association and has been at Penn three years.

Four-week classes begin Monday, March 16 and meet every Monday and Wednesday. Classes for beginner-level players meet from 11 a.m. to noon and classes for intermediate-level players meet from noon to 1 p.m. at Levy Tennis Pavilion. Course fees: $20 for Penn students, $45 for all others. Students must provide their own racquets.
