If some of the names on the rosters of professional baseball, soccer, football, basketball and hockey rosters sound familiar, it isn't your imagination. At last count, 31 former Ivy League student-athletes are under contract to professional sports teams, and 19 of those former Ivy League players are in the major leagues.
Two of the highest-profile former Ivy Leaguers are Penn alumni: Matt Maloney (C '95), who plays for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association, and Doug Glanville (EAS '92), who batted .300 for the Chicago Cubs last season.
Yale leads all institutions in the Ivy League with six former student-athletes in the professional ranks, followed by Harvard and Princeton (5), Dartmouth and Cornell (4), Columbia and Penn (3), and Brown (1).
Dartmouth and Yale both have four former student-athletes in professional baseball; two former Big Green players join Glanville as the only three former Ivy League standouts on major league baseball rosters. Princeton has four former Tigers in professional soccer; Harvard (3) and Cornell (2) dominate the Ivy League presence in professional hockey; and Cornell (2) has two of the five former Ivy League student-athletes playing in the National Football League.
