They came out to celebrate Leopold Stokowski -- you know, the guy that did "Fantasia."

The Friends of the Library and the Music Department honored legendary conductor Stokowski with a triumvirate of activities April 15. The event, "Leopold Stokowski: Making Music Matter," kicked off with a an afternoon symposium, followed by an exhibition of items from the Stokowski collection, and closed with a concert featuring Stokowski's well-known transcriptions, performed by Penn's Symphony Orchestra.

The event also commemorated the transfer of the Leopold Stokowski collection from the Curtis Institute of Music to the Penn Library.

"The program and exhibition were designed to celebrate Stokowski, but also to inform the Penn community and the general public about one of the most influential and controversial conductors of his generation," said Marjorie Hassen, Penn's music librarian.
