Our favorite summer flicks
Some preferred the intensity of "Saving Private Ryan." Some observed the fine summer tradition of just sitting back and enjoying the show. Some liked movies that connected to their own lives in some way. And then there were the poor unfortunates who never got out of the library.
- Yu-Ru Lin, Nursing Ph.D.
"Mulan" and "The Parent Trap"
"Mulan" is interesting, it's funny, and it's talking about my cultural background, which is great. I also liked Mushi the dragon -- that character's very funny. And "The Parent Trap" made you feel good about life. - Fawn McNeil, College, Class of 1999
"X-Files: The Movie"
I'm a huge "X-Files" fan. I have 73 episodes on tape, and the movie was like a huge episode. I also got to see Scully and Mulder almost kiss, but not quite. - Ozzie Guobadia, College, Class of 2001
"There's Something About Mary"
The ridiculous things the characters did made it funny. Especially Mary, the one the boys wanted. - Matt Danton, College, Class of 1999
"Saving Private Ryan"
It was the first movie that pulled no punches and showed what war is really about. I think it's an important movie for everyone to see. - Vincent Montemaggiore, SEAS, Class of 2000
"Armageddon"
It was the first time in a while that I saw a movie combine a love story with action and drama and do it in a way that kept your attention throughout the whole film. - Jake Boyer, Wharton MBA, Class of 2000
"Armageddon"
It was pretty fast-paced, kind of an adrenaline rush. When you don't want to absorb a movie, but just want to be entertained for a couple of hours, this is good. - Matt Butterfield, Music Ph.D.
"Saving Private Ryan"
I liked that it was honest about World War II. We think about it as "the last good war," and even though the right and wrong side was clear, it was still an extremely ugly affair. - Monique Horshaw, College, Class of 2002
"There's Something About Mary"
It was surprisingly funny. Actually, it was spectacular. - Tuan Wreh, College, Class of 2002
"The Jackal"
It was exciting and had a lot of action in it. - Romulus Johnson, visiting Princeton Ph.D.
No preference
As I spent most of my summer slaving away in Van Pelt, I'm not sure I can give you an answer. - Next Issue -- Our reporter asks students, "Which class are you dreading the most?"
