The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania has honored Maureen Rush and Kathryn Kolbert as women who are accomplished lawmakers, rule enforcers and community protectors. Vice President of Public Safety Rush oversees the strategic development of Penn’s police, fire and emergency services, special services and security. Since her tenure began, crime in the area has dropped 33 percent. Repeatedly recognized by the National Law Journal as one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America,” Kolbert has been counsel in numerous cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. She is now a senior research administrator with the Annenberg Public Policy Center and executive producer of “Justice Talking.”

Top-notch students

- School of Nursing senior Nicole Vujan has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Mexico during the 2002-2003 academic year. The Fulbright Program fosters mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange.

- College senior Vanessa Cuerel will spend next year studying abroad in Madrid thanks to a $25,000 Ambassadorial Scholarship from the Rotary Foundation, which funds one of the largest international scholarship awards in the world.

- Afia Ofori-Mensa (C’02), Paul Padovano (C’02) and Beatrice Jauregui (C’00) are now Mellon Fellows. Designed to help students prepare for careers in humanistic disciplines, the fellowship awards a $15,000 stipend and covers graduate tuition and required fees for the first academic year to any accredited graduate program in the United States and Canada.

- Jason Chinitz (C’03), Jonathan Wanderer (EAS/C’03) and Aryeh Warmflash (C’03) have won the Goldwater Scholarship, which was created to encourage careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The award covers up to $7,500 annually for tuition, books and room-and-board expenses.

- Thouron Fellows Pranav Gupta (EAS/W’02), Sherry Orbach (C’02) and Robert Pringle (C’01) will be heading to the United Kingdom next year to pursue graduate degrees. Gupta will spend his time studying economics at the London School of Economics while Orbach will study philosophy at Cambridge University. Pringle will study economic and social history at St. John’s College, Oxford University.

- Radhika Shroff (C/W’95,WG/ G’00) takes Penn’s second Luce Scholarship in a row. One of 18 winners selected from 67 U.S. universities and colleges, Shroff is currently an Internet business manager at Wells Fargo. The Luce Scholars Program provides stipend and internships for 18 young Americans to live and work in Asia for 10 months.
