On the square

The shops from 34th to 38th streets between Walnut and Chestnut just got a new name. It’s University Square, named after the new gathering place and green at 36th and Walnut, where entertainment (see “What’s On,” page 6)—like the music that made Thursday nights hop during the summer—will continue into the fall, said Anthony Sorrentino, marketing manager for Business Development.

Discussion is underway with SEPTA on whether the new name will make it onto the trolley stop at 36th and Sansom.

The thinking behind the name? To welcome all university students—from Drexel to University of the Sciences to University of the Arts—to shop here, Sorrentino said.

We floored ’em

An $8,000 gift from Penn enabled the Friends of Walnut West Library to wrap up ahead of schedule its fundraising campaign for a terrazzo floor for the building’s new lobby. The floor was the only unfunded part of the Friends’ lobby project, which will also pay for wood paneling, upgraded display cases and a hardwood circulation desk. Because of the donation, a challenge grant offered by neighborhood resident Mary Goldman will now help pay for a wooden balustrade around the lobby’s skylight opening. The library, located at 40th and Walnut streets, is scheduled to reopen at the end of 2003.

HUP most wired

Several rounds of applause for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Hospitals & Health Networks, the journal of the American Hospital Association, named it one of the nation’s 100 “Most Wired” hospitals and health systems. The hospital was recognized for its use of the Internet to connect with patients, physicians and nurses, health plans and employees. And for the sixth consecutive year, HUP has landed on U.S. News & World Report’s honor roll of hospitals, a recognition given to only 17 hospitals in the nation. No other hospital in the Delaware Valley made the cut.
