One notch higher

The latest U.S.News & World Report rankings of “America’s Best Colleges” were released last Friday, and Penn is in a five-way tie for fourth place among national universities this year, up one position from last year. Joining Penn in fourth place are California Institute of Technology, Duke, MIT and Stanford; Princeton, Harvard and Yale (tied for second) occupy the top spots. Of the top ten schools, only Yale and Princeton had a higher percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students, and Penn ranked first in faculty resources among national universities.

Healthy legs

Legs for Life will have you walking towards a healthier life. The program, sponsored by Interventional Radiology at Penn’s Medical Center and the Society of Interventional Radiology, is offering free screenings for peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). PVD, which affects 10 million Americans, typically over age 50, is caused by blocked blood flow in leg arteries. It often causes pain or swelling, difficulty walking, numbness and skin discoloration. Many at risk of PVD are also in danger of AAA, which is caused by a weakened area in the main vessel that supplies blood form the heart to the rest of the body. AAA is the 13th leading cause of death in the United States. Specialists will be on hand Sept. 27, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Bodek Lounge, Houston Hall. Appointments required. Call 215-615-3591/3541 or 215-662-3110 (Spanish).
