This year’s graduating class entered Penn during a time of peace. They leave it to venture out into a time of conflict, with international tensions much in the news.

It is perhaps appropriate, then, that the speaker at Penn’s 247th Commencement is a man whose work helped end the violence of the fight against apartheid in South Africa, 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Archbishop Tutu is only one of many notables who will address graduates of Penn’s 12 graduate and four undergraduate schools this year. Other well-known speakers include Gov. Edward G. Rendell (C’65,Hon’00) and his wife, Judge Marjorie O. Rendell (CW’69), former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, CNN anchor and reporter Wolf Blitzer and authors Lorene Cary (C/G’78) and Jonathan Kozol.

In addition to the Commencement festivities, there’s also Alumni Weekend—a chance for old grads and new to reconnect with each other and with dear old Penn. Among the Alumni Weekend activities are the annual Alumni Run and exchanges with Penn faculty.
