Distinguished scholar-educator Amy Gutmann has been nominated to serve as the eighth President of the University of Pennsylvania.
Gutman, who is currently Provost and Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Politics at Princeton University, will assume office July 1, subject to approval by Penn’s Board of Trustees. That approval is expected at the Trustees’ Feb. 20 meeting.
The award-winning political philosopher is known for her works on democracy and public discourse. At Princeton, Gutmann earned a reputation for fairness in dealing with colleagues and established a track record of attracting top-notch faculty to the school.
At a Jan. 22 news conference announcing her selection, Gutmann identified ensuring that the University has the funds it needs to maintain its need-blind admissions policy as one of her top priorities.
“Amy is a brilliant scholar with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, a proven and skilled administrator who understands the challenges of running a major research university and an articulate spokesperson about the essential role of higher education in our lives and the future of society,” said James S.
