Charles and Ray Eames are best known for the high-quality, low-cost furniture and architecture that made them two of the most important designers of the 20th century. But they were also groundbreaking filmmakers and toy designers who found beauty in the everyday. The exhibit “Whimsical Works,” which opens at the Arthur Ross Gallery on July 22, is devoted to their lesser-known passion for play things. The exhibit features two of their structural building creations—The Toy prototype (pictured at left) and House of Cards—and three of their films—“Tops,” “Toccata for Toy Trains” and “Kaleidoscope for Jazz Chair.” Photographs by Charles Eames on the history and creation of those objects will accompany the work. “Whimsical Works,” runs through September 11, and was arranged by Masters of Liberal Arts students in the Halpern-Rogath Curatorial Seminar, taught by George H.
