In these tough economic times, it can be difficult to splurge on a night out on the town. But this summer, several vendors along Baltimore Avenue in West Philly are making it easy with a Dollar Stroll. On June 10, July 8 and Aug. 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., 15 businesses along Baltimore Avenue are offering food, drinks and merchandise for just $1. Start your walk at the Green Line Cafe, at the corner of 43rd Street, for a $1 coffee or tea; then stop by the Milk and Honey Market (pictured above) at the corner of 45th Street for a $1 scoop of ice cream; next, go to the Baltimore Ave. Pet Shoppe, between 45th and 46th streets, for $1 toys, treats and accessories for cats and dogs; and be sure not to miss $1 souvenir logo pint glasses and pizza slices at Dock Street Brewery, located at the corner of 50th Street. Along the way, patrons can pick up $1 tickets for preview performances at the Curio Theatre Company, stop for a yoga class at Studio 34 Healing Arts and pick up a handprinted West Philly patch at VIX Emporium.

Gift to support PIK

Emeritus Trustee Stephen J. Heyman W’59 has made a $5 million gift to endow a Penn Integrates Knowledge Professorship. The gift will be used to create the I. George Heyman University professorship, in honor of Stephen Heyman’s father.

PIK professors are exceptional interdisciplinary scholars whose research and teaching exemplify the integration of knowledge across academic disciplines. The University has 10 PIK professors, who hold joint appointments in two schools and whose disciplines include epidemiology and health psychology; mathematics and engineering; and anthropology and filmmaking, among others.

Heyman has previously endowed two other full professorships at Penn: the Stephen J. Heyman Professorship in the Wharton School and the Bess W. Heyman Professorship in Sociology in the School of Arts and Sciences, in honor of his mother. He has also made several capital gifts to the University, including building projects at Wharton and the School of Nursing. Heyman was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1996 and is a member of the School of Nursing Board of Overseers. He is also one of the founders of the Penn Club of New York and an honorary member of The Penn Fund Executive Board. In 2000, Heyman was recognized with the Alumni Award of Merit, the University’s highest honor.

Deep discount

When Penn students move out of dorms and apartments at the end of the school year, they leave behind clothes, small appliances, furniture and non-perishable food items. PennMOVES is the University’s annual charity drive to collect and redistribute these items; this year’s first-come, first-served sale takes place on Saturday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Penn Ice Rink, 3130 Walnut St. Early-bird admission, from 8 to 10 a.m., is $5 and admission after 10 a.m. is free.

But before the sale can happen, helping hands are needed to transport, sort and organize the donated items. Volunteers are being asked to work two-hour shifts through June 5. The shifts run Monday through Friday: 9 to 11 a.m.; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1 to 3 p.m.; and 3 to 5 p.m. Volunteers can sign up for more than one shift and are especially needed on the day of the sale.

Last year, more than 45 tons of objects that would have otherwise been sent to a landfill were collected from campus residence halls and sold through PennMOVES, raising $30,000 for the United Way. Proceeds from this year’s sale will again benefit the United Way for distribution to West Philadelphia charitable organizations.

Early detection To increase the importance of early detection, Penn Dermatology and the Abramson Cancer Center are sponsoring a free skin cancer screening on Saturday, May 22. Anyone is welcome to attend, but you must register first by calling 215-662-2737. The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon in Suite 1-330S, Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, 3400 Civic Center Blvd
