PennMOVES in need of University volunteers

PennMOVES, the University’s sale of donated clothing and household items from students heading home for summer break, has made a few new moves of its own.

This year, the sale will be conducted with a new collaborating organization/beneficiary. It will be held at a new location and a new system will be in place to process the donations. What hasn’t changed is the need for Penn volunteers.

The University is working with Goodwill Industries, one of the world’s largest nonprofit providers of employment training services for people with disabilities and other employment barriers, to provide technical expertise and logistical support. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Goodwill’s local job-training programs, including programs for commercial drivers and ex-offenders.

“Each year, as we plan for a new PennMOVES, we look for ways to enhance the process,” says Marie Witt, vice president of the Business Services Division. “What we realized as this project grew was that we needed additional resources and expertise to supplement the dedicated group of Penn staff that had traditionally coordinated the operation. We sought to find a community organization with the capability to manage large volume donations. Goodwill was a natural fit.”

The community sale will take place on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the new 23-acre home of Penn Transit, located at Grays Ferry Avenue and 34th Street.  Penn purchased the site last year and moved the transportation services unit there in January. Admission to the sale is free, but bargain hunters can pay a $5 early admittance fee for entry on a first-come, first-served basis from 8 to 10 a.m. Free parking is also available.

Although Goodwill is handling the organizing and sale functions, volunteers from the Penn community are still needed to help at various collection points across campus starting on Monday, May 2. Two-hour volunteer shifts can be scheduled weekdays through May 31, with some early evening and weekend slots available as well. Register online at www.upenn.edu/pennmoves.
