Eric Furda: Clarifying the college application process
When Eric Furda, dean of undergraduate admissions and a Penn alumnus, recently went on Clear Channel Radio to offer tips on the college-admissions process, his interviewer took a particularly personal interest in his answers.
For his interviewer—a rising high school senior in the midst of the complicated application process— and for listeners, Furda acted as a college counselor, providing a detailed list of practical approaches and strategies that can help high schoolers navigate the labyrinth.
“Particularly for a student like yourself,” Furda told the interviewer, “as a rising senior, just think about the range of choices that you have in front of you in terms of places that you can [apply].” He added that it is important to take control of the process early, and to think about the qualities one wants in a college, rather than focusing on a name.
Later in the interview, Furda also explained why he is a “water slide.”
For the Class of 2015, Penn had a record applicant pool of 31,663—an 18 percent increase over last year and the largest in the University’s history. Penn admitted 3,931 students, or 12.4 percent of the applicants.
