Knowledge for free
Wharton Digital Press is offering readers a free e-book through Sept. 17. The book, “Why Good People Can’t Get Jobs: The Skills Gap and What Companies Can Do About It,” is the work of Wharton management professor Peter Cappelli.
In the book, Cappelli debunks the common argument that jobs are going unfilled because there is a serious skills gap. He also says the frequent complaints that job seekers won’t work for wages that are offered, and schools aren’t preparing students for the job market are myths.
One impediment to people not finding work lies within the hiring process itself, Cappelli writes. Althought it is true that the hiring process has been made easier by technology such as online applications, the sheer number of applicants can sometimes overwhelm hiring officers.
In the book, Cappelli offers solutions that companies can employ to fix the problem.
Free downloads of the book are available at Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Sony. For more information and updates, visit Wharton Digital Press at http://wdp.wharton.upenn.edu/.
