Parents and kids have a chance to see the Penn Museum’s famous Sphinx in a unique way, with the “40 Winks with the Sphinx” special sleepover events. The overnight expedition of the Museum is open to kids, ages 6 to 12, and their parents or chaperones.

The night’s activities are geared to take intrepid explorers on a journey through time and across continents, with hands-on games and crafts to explore ancient Egypt, the mummies and hieroglyphics, the ancient Greeks and Romans, the world of the ancient Maya, and more. Participants take part in a scavenger hunt and an evening expedition through the galleries by flashlight. When it’s time for bed, they roll out their sleeping bags to doze at the foot of the third-largest granite Sphinx in the world, by the 3,200-year-old pillars from the great palace of the Pharaoh Merneptah, son of Ramesses II. The event concludes with a light breakfast the next day in the Museum Café.

The November event is sold out, but there are tickets available for other dates, including Dec. 12, as well as Jan. 16 and 30, 2015. “40 Winks” sleepovers occur on occasional Fridays through early June of next year and run $50 per person, $40 per Museum member, and $45 per person for groups of 21 or more.
