David Ferreira C’04, from Hamilton, Bermuda, has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, which will fund two to three years of study at Oxford University in England. Ferreira, a Politics, Philosophy and Economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences, plans to pursue a Bachelor of Laws degree in his first two years at Oxford, followed by a Master of Jurisprudence in his final year.
He is the first Penn student to be awarded a non-U.S. Rhodes Scholarship and the University’s 17th Rhodes Scholar overall. Approximately 95 students are selected each year to receive the prestigious award; Bermuda selects only one scholar annually.
A decorated athlete in Bermuda, Ferreira has played on Penn’s varsity men’s squash team and numerous club teams (“Student Spotlight,” Current, Feb. 13, 2003). He is also a member of the PPE program’s Undergraduate Assembly Board and the vice-president and philanthropy chair of the Owl Society of Philadelphia.
Upon graduation from Oxford, Ferreira plans to return to Bermuda to practice law.

In honor of Valentine's Day, and as a way of fostering community in her Shakespeare in Love course, Becky Friedman took her students to the University Club for lunch one class period. They talked about the movie "Shakespeare in Love," as part of a broader conversation on how Shakespeare's works are adapted.
