Exhibitions Set at Penn's Graduate School of Fine Arts

PHILADELPHIA -- With the end of the semester at the University of Pennsylvania, there is an explosion of exhibitions showcasing studentswork. The works of these emerging artists offer an opportunity to begin an art collection or simply a chance to witness the beginning of a career.

Penn Graduate School of Fine Arts has several exhibitions in the upcoming weeks.

Through May 30, the Printmaking Department of Fine Arts is hosting its annual "Penn Printmakers," featuring works by undergraduate and graduate students, visiting artists and fine-arts faculty. Held in the Burrison Art Gallery at the Inn at Penn, 3611 Walnut St., the works are those of students in architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, fine arts, psychology and business.

Also running through May 30 is "Folio 2002." Forty graduate students, artists in residence and faculty have produced 42 editions of original prints, from hand printed to digitally output. All works will be available for purchase.

On May 1, the Class of 2002 Master of Fine Arts candidates will hold their thesis exhibition at The Power Plant, 233 N. Broad St. Curated by noted Brooklyn writer and sculptor Matthew Freedman, the works shown by the 27 emerging artists will include many media, including digital images, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video. On May 15, the Charles Addams Gallery, 200 S. 36th St., will host visiting artist Shigeo Kuroki. Kuroki, currently on sabbatical from Seinan Gakuin University in Japan, was trained as a printmaker. His most recent works are large acrylic paintings that use representational imagery in humorous and provocative ways. His work is in major collections in Japan, Korea and Poland.
