Hill Square Women's Sculpture Project to Be Unveiled

WHAT:The unveiling of the Women's Sculpture Project that has transformed the Hill Field open space bounded by 33rd, 34th, Walnut and Chestnut streets into Hill Square, a gateway to the University of Pennsylvania campus.  Landscaping and lighting accentuate a diagonal walkway integrated with 25 Years,a sculpture by Jenny Holzer comprised of granite elements inscribed with text commemorating 125 years of women at the University.  

WHO:Alumnae who funded the project in honor of the 125th anniversary of the admission of women to Penn will join with current students, faculty, staff and administrators, including Penn President Judith Rodin.  Additionally, the Trustees Council of Penn Women commissioned the University's music department to compose a score specifically for this dedication that will be performed by several singers and musicians.   

WHERE:Hill Square, 34th and Walnut streets, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

WHEN:2:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, with a 3-4 p.m. reception at Hill House, a student residence adjacent to Hill Square.

The new Hill Square features a poplar-lined, curving brick walkway from 34th and Walnut to 33rd and Chestnut streets.  At the path's midpoint, a wooden ridgecrosses a low-lying area containing wetlands plantings.  In the coming years, new buildings will form defined edges to Hill Square: The McNeil Center for Early American Studies at 34th and Walnut streets and a new college house residence building along 33rd Street.

Reporters and photographers will have the opportunity to meet Jenny Holzer, an internationally renowned, New York-based sculptor.  Holzer selected alumnae quotations that have been placed on 22 granite benches and matching granite curbing on the walkway.  She collaborated with the project's landscape architect, Olin Partnership of Philadelphia, and the lighting designer, L'Observatoire of New York.
