At the same time that China and other nations seek to replicate the American model of broad education in the humanities, social sciences and natural science, enrollment in humanities programs in the United States is dropping.
 
A new report, “The Heart of the Matter,” from the Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences is calling for greater support in these fields to create a stronger, more adaptable and more creative workforce.
 
Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania, and Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of Penn’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, are members of the 54-person Commission.
 
The panel makes 13 broad recommendations, one of which is the creation of a new corps of "master teachers" in the humanities and social sciences.
 
The Commission was co-chaired by Richard Brodhead, president of Duke University, and John Rowe, former chair of energy company Exelon.
