ICA Fall Exhibitions Events Calendar

The Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania opens its 2002-2003 season with two premieres: the first one-person museum shows by Damián Ortega (first in the U.S.) and Amy Cutler. ICA also presents the first East Coast showing of the popular exhibit Pictures, Patents, Monkeys, and More...On Collecting. In the ramp corridor ICA unveils Without Ground by Kimowan McLain, the second in its series of commissioned installations for this space. These exhibitions will open to the public on Wednesday, September 4, 2002 and continue through December 15, 2002. The Opening Reception, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, 2002 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Pictures, Patents, Monkeys, and More...On Collecting
In the realm of collecting, everything is fair game. This exhibition examines collecting as both imagery and process in contemporary art. Includes works from four distinct collections: the Robert J. Shiffler Foundation contemporary art collection, patent models from the U.S. Patent Office, a private collection of vintage sock monkeys and, exclusively at the ICA, Egyptian antiquities from the University Of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Organized and circulated by Independent Curators International (ICI) and guest curated by Ingrid Schaffner, ICA's Senior Curator.

Damián Ortega, Cosmic Thing
Ortega's art transforms everyday objects (including a Volkswagen Beetle) into commentary on topics including economic development and globalization.

Amy Cutler
Amy Cutler's finely crafted and highly detailed drawings of girls reveal surrealistic narratives that intertwine innocent fantasy and psychological conflict.

Kimowan McLain, Without Ground
Ongoing from September 4, 2002

McLain's imagery offers fragments of narratives connected to Native American identity, culture, and loss.

The ICA is located at 118 South 36th Street at the University of Pennsylvania. The ICA is open to the public, except during installation, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday and from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for students over 12, artists, and senior citizens. Admission is free to ICA members, children 12 and under, PENN card holders, and on Sundays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. For more information, call 215-898-7108, or visit www.icaphila.org.
