PHILADELPHIA – Janine Remillard, a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named vice chair of the U.S. National Commission for Mathematics Instruction for a two-year term.  She has served on the commission since 2009.

 The commission plans, recommends and encourages projects in areas of international importance in mathematical sciences education.  It also serves a key advisory role with the National Academy of Sciences’ International Commission on Mathematical Instruction in promoting global interaction among mathematics researchers and educators.  

Remillard, a former teacher in St. Louis and Lansing, Mich., joined the Penn GSE faculty in 1977 and serves as one of the primary faculty in the Teacher Education program and the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum specialization.  She also chairs the School’s Foundations and Practices of Education division. Her research interests include mathematics teacher education and learning, teachers’ interactions with mathematics curriculum materials, urban education, teaching practices in the context of educational policy and the role of parents in supporting students' mathematics learning.
