PHILADELPHIA — “Kings, Chiefs and Women of Power: Images From Nigeria,” which opens at the University of Pennsylvania’s Arthur Ross Gallery on Nov. 14, is an exhibit of 30 large Cibachrome prints by Phyllis Galembo.

These photographs, taken in 1993-1994, highlight the costumes, customs and traditions of the Benin and southern Nigerian communities.

Special events include a lectures on “Ritual Dress, Costume and Masquerade” with the photographer Galembo on Nov. 13 at 4:30 p.m. and “Status Symbols: Ritual and Political Impressions in Southern Nigeria” with Kathy Curnow, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology’s guest curator on Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m.

Penn Museum will display 19th and early 20th century Benin and southern Nigeria objects of prestige to provide a greater cultural context.

“Kings, Chiefs and Women of Power” runs at the Arthur Ross Gallery, 220 S. 34th St., through Jan. 18. The exhibit runs concurrently with “Iyare! Splendor and Tension in Benin’s Palace Theater” at Penn Museum from Nov. 8 to March 10.

Arthur Ross Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and weekends noon-5 p.m. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
