PHILADELPHIA--- "Leaving a Mark: The Art of the Print in 19th Century France" will open April 6 at the University of Pennsylvania Arthur Ross Gallery.

The exhibition includes woodblock prints, etchings and lithographs by French masters including Czanne, Degas, Delacroix, Gauguin, Manet and Pissarro. Nearly 80 prints from the Arthur Ross Foundation, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and private collections will be featured.

During the last 20 years of the 19th century, the formation of printmaking societies, the publishing of print journals and the experiments of individual artists allowed printmaking to evolve as an original means of expression rather than simply a process of image reproduction. "Leaving a Mark" demonstrates the versatility of print media and pays homage to the avant-garde, which raised the status of the print to a work of art.

Penn art historian James Hargrove co-curated the exhibition with his undergraduate art history students under the auspices of Dilys Winegrad, director/curator of the Arthur Ross Gallery.

The exhibition continues through June 9.
