PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Michael Nutter will deliver the keynote address at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice’s Black Men at Penn fifth-anniversary gala on Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Penn’s Huntsman Hall.

Nutter, a Penn alum, will speak at the “Without Struggle There Is No Progress” fundraising gala for Black Men at Penn, an organization that recruits African-American males into the field of social work, provides mentoring and therapy for at-risk youth and conducts anti-violence and anti-racism training in area schools.

“We’re honored to have Mayor Nutter as the keynote speaker for the fifth year anniversary of Black Men at Penn,” Chad Dion Lassiter, the organization’s president, said. “As we celebrate diversity within the profession of social work and mark the importance of making a difference in our own communities, the mayor embodies those ideas. He has a passion for working toward a better Philadelphia, as well as a commitment to public service.”

The gala is one of many events during the School of Social Policy and Practice’s year-long centennial celebration, highlighting 100 years of social-work education at Penn.

Other events, special lectures, two new books about the school’s history and the formation of a new scholarship will also mark the centennial.
