A Message From Penn President Amy Gutmann About the Earthquake in Chile

As we continue to receive reports from Chile regarding the widespread damage and serious injuries caused by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on Saturday, our thoughts and prayers are with those who are anxiously awaiting news about family and friends.

I am pleased to report that all three Penn undergraduates currently studying abroad in the city of Santiago are safe and in contact with the University. And while communication in and out of Chile remains difficult, we at Penn are doing what we can to help students with family there reach loved ones. Counseling, psychological services and other resources are available to any students in need of assistance at the following locations:

Counseling and Psychological Services, 215-898-7021, or caps@pobox.upenn.edu.

University Chaplain’s Office, 215-898-8456, or email The Rev. Chaz Howard at choward@pobox.upenn.edu.

Vice Provost for University Life, 215-898-6081, or avpsa@pobox.upenn.edu.

As we learn more about the immediate, and the long-term, needs of the people of Chile, students, staff and faculty at Penn will work together to respond with care and commitment.

Please keep those who have been affected by this disaster and those who are assisting them in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Amy Gutmann
