PHILADELPHIA- "Modern Indian Works on Paper," which opens at the University of Pennsylvania's Arthur Ross Gallery on Jan. 13, presents 61 works on paper in watercolor, pen and ink, pencil and gouache, as well as prints, made by Indian artists since Indian independence in 1947.   Since then, India has seen an explosion of contemporary art, which has only recently come to the attention of the general international art community.

Included are a broad range of Indian artists active during the last six decades, from the members of the groundbreaking Progressive Artists Group - Souza, Husain, Ara and Raza - to other first- and second-generation modernists, such as Shymal, Dutta Ray, Laxma Goud and Ganesh Pyne, who have worked in graphic media.  Also included are younger artists who have emerged over the last two decades.

The exhibition is drawn from the collection of Umesh and Sunanda Gaur, who in March 2003, were featured on the cover of  the "Top Collectors in America" issue Art and Antiques magazine.  "Modern Indian Works on Paper" was curated by Jeffrey Wechsler, senior curator at Rutgers University's Zimmerli Art Museum. A fully illustrated color catalogue accompanies the exhibition, which runs through March 11.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and weekends from noon to 5 p.m.
