WHAT: As part of the University of Pennsylvania’s participation in RecycleMania, Bon Appétit at Penn Dining is hosting a Scrape Bucket Challenge, when students will be asked to scrape whatever is left over on their plates into large containers located in each dining facility on campus. The containers will be measured each day to track the level of food waste over the course of the week.

RecycleMania is a competition that features more than 400 schools across the nation vying to see which school can eliminate the most waste and increase its rate of recycling.

WHO: Students from the Penn Environmental Group and the Penn Eco-Reps program are collaborating with Bon Appétit at Penn Dining to staff the collection stations and weigh the waste.

WHEN: Noon-1 p.m. and 6 -7 p.m. Monday–Friday, Feb. 8 –12

WHERE: The Scrape Bucket Challenge will take place in Penn’s three student dining facilities:

DETAILS: The Scrape Bucket Challenge will highlight the environmental impact of food waste, help diners understand how to reduce food waste and launch Penn’s new composting program. The amount of daily waste will be measured before being added to kitchen waste to be sent to a new composting facility in Wilmington, Del. The food waste composting will also contribute to Penn’s RecycleMania totals.
