Penn Engineering, Central High School Celebrate $30,000 Donation of Equipment for New Engineering Class

WHAT:
Engineers from the University of Pennsylvania and faculty from Central High School will celebrate the donation of mechanical testing instrument from the Instron Corporation. CHS will use the instrument as the experimental cornerstone of a new course in materials science, which will enable students to measure the strength of materials ranging from steel to plastics to bone. The equipment is used in engineering to test the tension, compression, fatigue and hardness of materials and is a standard tool for material science engineering
More than 100 students vied for 34 seats in the course, funded by the National Science Foundation and designed by Central High School instructor Schuyler Patton, with assistance from Andrew McGhie, Russ Composto and Karen Winey of Penn's Materials Science and Engineering Department.
The dedication ceremony will feature a demonstration by Instron’s Jim Ritchey and Patton.
