WHAT:

“Don’t Forget Katrina” is a panel discussion comprised of University of Pennsylvania volunteers from the School of Social Policy and Practice, the School of Nursing, the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Dental Medicine. Penn volunteers will share their assessments of health-related issues in Hancock County, Miss., including whether the water there is safe for human consumption. They will also discuss their personal experiences on the Mississippi coast.

WHY:

After Hurricane Katrina, suicides, suicide attempts and domestic violence and child abuse have skyrocketed. Penn is establishing a University-wide collaborative effort to help Hancock County, Miss., rebuild, from its social services to its water supply. Penn is working on a disaster-relief model, which can be adopted by other colleges and universities.
