Penn To Host Concert Featuring Composers George Crumb And George Rochberg
PHILADELPHIA - The music of 20th-Century composers George Crumb and George Rochberg will be featured in a Nov. 10 concert at the University of Pennsylvania.
The program will consist of Crumb's "Celestial Mechanics (Makrokosmos IV)" for amplified piano (four hands) and "A Little Suite for Christmas, A. D. 1979" for piano and Rochberg's "String Quartet No. 3."
The concert, which is the plenary event of the Society for Music Theory's 2001 international conference, will feature performances by pianists Lambert Orkis and James Primosch and the Cassatt String Quartet.
The concert will include a conversation with the composers, both of whom have made significant contributions to American music.
Rochberg's work has been performed internationally by such ensembles as the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Crumb has received both the Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. His music has been widely performed and recorded in the U.S. and throughout the world. His works have been performed by the major American orchestras.
The concert, sponsored by the Society for Music Theory and Penn's Department of Music of the School of Arts and Sciences, is set for 8 p.m., Nov. 10, in Irvine Auditorium, 34th and Spruce streets. The admission price is $12. Penn students with a Penn identification card will be admitted free.
