Penn Law School Professor Appointed to U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council

Feb. 11, 2004

PHILADELPHIA  -- Harry Reicher, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania Law School, has been named by President Bush to the Holocaust Memorial Council, the governing body of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.  The council is comprised of 55 presidential appointees, 10 congressional representatives and three members from the departments of Education, Interior and State.

"Being appointed by the president to the United States HolocaustMemorial Council is a great honor," Reicher said.  "It constitutes extraordinary recognition of the pioneering, and extremely important, work we are doing at Penn Law School in researching and teaching about the legal dimension to the Holocaust."

Reicher created the course "Law and the Holocaust" at Penn. The course examines how the Nazis perverted the German legal system to discriminate against, ostracize, dehumanize and ultimately eliminate certain classes of people. The course also addresses the post-Holocaust creation of international human rights law.
