PHILADELPHIA -- University of Pennsylvania Professor Wayne Worrell has received the 2004 Edward Goodrich Acheson Award at the 206th Meeting of the Electrochemical Society.   The award consists of a gold medal and  $10,000.  

Worrell, who joined the faculty in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 1965, received the award in recognition of his scientific achievements and outstanding service to the materials-science community.

The award was founded in 1928, by Edward G. Acheson, the Society sixth president.  Worrell is the 37th person to receive the award and the first from Penn.

Worrell runs an internationally known research group in high-temperature materials chemistry.   He has published more than 110 scientific papers, has 10 patents and has directed 27 doctoral theses.  His current research includes the properties and novel applications in the emerging field of solid oxide fuel cells.
