PHILADELPHIA -- Brian Sutton-Smith, professor emeritus in the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, has received a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant to lecture and consult for two weeks at the Australian Centre of the University of Melbourne and also at the Museum Victoria.

Sutton-Smith is a child-development expert and directed a child culture group during his tenure at Penn. His research interests include play history and the cross-cultural study of play, as well as psychology, education and folklore.

He had a secondary appointment in the folklore department at the School of Arts and Sciences and taught at Penn for 20 years before retiring in the mid-1990s.

Sutton-Smith's books include "The Ambiguity of Play," "Play and Intervention," "A History of Children's Play," "Play and Learning," "Child's Play" and "The Study of Games."

The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and managed by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The purpose of the grant is to increase understanding between Americans and people of other countries.
