Paul Goldin, professor of Chinese thought in the East Asian Languages and Civilization Department of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, has received a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.         

He has been named the Willis F. Doney Member of the IAS School of Historical Studies.      

This fall during a sabbatical semester of residence he is working on a history of early Chinese philosophy focused on eight texts from the classical period: Analects of Confucius, Mozi, Mencius, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Sunzi, Xunzi, and Han Feizi.

Goldin’s main area of research is the era referred to as the Warring States period of ancient China. At Penn, he has taught courses on civilization, classical Chinese thought, sex and society in ancient China, early Chinese history and law in pre-modern China.

Goldin joins two previously announced members of the Penn faculty named IAS Fellows. David Grazian, associate professor of sociology and Vanessa Ogle, assistant professor of history are working on books and pursuing their research for the 2013-14 academic year at the IAS School of Social Science.
