Sophomores come up big in women’s lax win over Brown

Rosenzweig, Barry lead Quakers to victory over Bears at Penn Park.

Sophomore Gabby Rosenzweig scored a career-high nine points, the most by a Penn player since 2012. 

The Penn women’s lacrosse team overcame a 7-2 deficit against Brown on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Ivy League with a 16-10 victory at Penn Park.

Sophomore Gabby Rosenzweig scored a career-high nine points—four goals and five assists—the most points by a Penn player since 2012. Fellow sophomore Erin Barry was also in her bag, with five goals—four in the second half—and one assist. 

Penn (8-1, 2-0 Ivy), the No. 6 ranked team in the country, was held scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game as Brown took a 3-0 lead. Senior Alex Condon put the Quakers on the board with a goal with 18 minutes left in the first half. Rosenzweig added another to pull Penn within one. Brown scored the next four goals, to take a 7-2 advantage.

Two quick goals from Rosenzweig and Barry made it a 7-4 game. Rosenzweig scored an unassisted goal with 30 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 7-5.

Thirty-five seconds into the second half, Barry scored her second goal of the game to bring the Quakers within one. Senior Caroline Cummings tied it up at 7-7. Barry’s third goal of the game gave the Quakers a 9-8 lead, their first of the day.

Brown tied the game 9-9 shortly thereafter, but the Quakers responded with the next three goals, and added four more to secure the win.

Rosenzweig, from Somers, N.Y., has 34 points over her last six games, averaging 5.67 points-per-game. Penn is 8-0 this season when scoring 11 or more goals, and 8-0 this season when holding opponents under 11 goals.

Next up for the Quakers is Northwestern, on April 1 at noon at Franklin Field.
