Vice Admiral Richard Carmona dropped out of high school, enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to receive his Army General Equivalency Diploma and eventually a degree in medicine. He is a combat-decorated Vietnam veteran and has worked in the medical field as a paramedic, registered nurse, physician, hospital chief executive officer and as a professor of medicine at the University of Arizona. President George W. Bush named Carmona as the nation's 17th surgeon general in March 2002.
