University City District plans action-packed summer

Summer in Philadelphia’s University City means restaurant specials, a “Dollar Stroll,” and free concerts and movies.

The events are sponsored by the University City District (UCD), a partnership of local residents, businesses, and institutions dedicated to community revitalization that is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

“It’s our most robust season to date,” says Alissa Weiss, UDC director of communications. “We are looking forward to celebrating with our community throughout an action-packed summer event season.”

Penn co-sponsors five free concerts in the 40th Street Summer Series, held on the green area behind the Walnut Street West Library, May through September, starting at 6 p.m. on selected Saturdays.

The first concert, by the Sun Ra Arkestra, will be held on May 20. Juggling, face-painting, and free food samples and giveaways start at 5 p.m. Additional concerts are scheduled for June 17, July 22, Aug. 19, and Sept. 16.

PECO Performances at The Porch, on the south side of 30th Street Station, offer free lunchtime performances from May through September. Upcoming performances include Positive Movement Entertainment, a youth drumming group, on May 30; sousaphonist Dan Nosheny on June 8; and the soulful, beat-driven group Music Over Matter on June 13.

The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll features $1 bargains at neighborhood businesses between 43rd and 52nd streets from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, and Thursday, Sept. 7. Patrons can sample food from restaurants and purchase everything from pet supplies to theater tickets.
