PHILADELPHIA –- Recipients of the University of Pennsylvania’s Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Awards for Distinguished Teaching, Provost’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Provost’s Awards for Distinguished Ph.D. Teaching and Mentoring have been announced.
The Lindback Awards, presented to members of Penn’s standing faculty since 1961, were established by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation to recognize distinguished teaching at colleges and universities throughout the mid-Atlantic service area of Abbotts Dairies Inc. Christian Lindback was president and principal of Abbott’s Dairies.
The Provost’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, given in conjunction with the Lindbacks since 1988, go to selected full- and part-time associated faculty or academic support staff.
The Provost’s Award for Distinguished Ph.D. Teaching and Mentoring was established in 2003 to honor faculty who mentor Ph.D. students. The award celebrates the accomplishments of members of the standing or associated faculty in any school offering the Ph.D. who show special distinction in doctoral education.

Honored with the Lindback Awards for Distinguished Teaching are:
• Michael Atchison, professor of biochemistry and director of the V.M.D.-Ph.D. program in the Penn School of Veterinary Medicine.
• Stanley Goldfarb, professor of medicine in the Penn School of Medicine.
• Joshua Metlay, associate professor of medicine and associate professor of epidemiology in the School of Medicine.
• Therese Richmond, associate professor in the Penn School of Nursing.
• Emma Dillon, associate professor of music in the Penn School of Arts and Sciences,
• Avery Goldstein, professor and chair of political science in School of Arts and Sciences.
• Robert Hornik, professor of communications Penn’s Annenberg School for Communication.
• Carol Wilson Spigner, professor/clinician educator in the Penn School of Social Policy and Practice.

The Provost's Awards for Teaching Excellence will be presented to:
• Tom Faust, associate professor of clinical medicine in the School of Medicine.
• Anne Drury Hall, lecturer in the Department of English of the School of Arts and Sciences.

The Provost’s Awards for Distinguished Ph.D. Teaching and Mentoring will go to:
• Nancy Hornberger, professor of education and director of educational linguistics in the Penn Graduate School of Education,
• Robert Schuyler, associate professor and graduate group chair of anthropology and associate curator-in-charge of the Historical Archaeology Section of the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

A reception honoring all of the award recipients will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 21, in the Benjamin Franklin Room in Houston Hall.
