In “Your Spirits Walk Beside Us: The Politics of Black Religion ” Dr. Savage counters the assumption that African-American religion and progressive politics have long been intertwined. She demonstrates that the ten¬sion between faith and political activism in black churches testifies to the difficult and unpredictable project of cou¬pling religion and politics in the 20th century.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented as part of the Penn Center for Africana Studies 2010 Spring Event Series.
