PHILADELPHIA  The University of Pennsylvania has been recognized as one of the nation's 20 best campuses for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Penn is featured in The Advocate College Guide of 100 best LGBT-friendly campuses in the United States.  Penn was recognized for its resources and its positive living and learning environment for LGBT students.

"We are happy that Penn is being recognized as one of the top campuses for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students," Penn Provost Ron Daniels said. "I am particularly proud of Penn's LGBT Center, which has a decades-long tradition of service to LGBT students and to the University as a whole."

LGBT students, faculty and staff from colleges and universities from throughout the United States chose the top 100 from among 680 nominations.  The campuses selected for the book were rated on institutional policies, commitment and support, academic life, housing, student life, counseling and health services, campus safety and recruitment and retention efforts.

Penn's LGBT Center, established in 1982, is one of the first and most active on college campuses. "The diligence and commitment of Penn students, staff and faculty has been recognized by a nationwide survey team," Bob Schoenberg, director of Penn's LGBT Center, said.   "We are very proud and determined to maintain our place as one of the most supportive universities for LGBT students and employees."
