They make us melt

The movies that melt our Valentine's Day chocolates are not the same for everyone.

So we sent our writer out to Locust Walk and also into cyberspace to find out what our readers watch to inspire romance. We've struggled to preview these for you, and surprisingly enough, we found that while most of them made Tootsie Rolls Pops melt in our mouths, others froze our ice cubes ... so no guarantees. For better or for worse, in sickness and in health, these movies are our valentine to you, dear readers.

  • Kevin C. Welch, College, Class of '95
"'The Empire Strikes Back.' When Leia says, 'I love you,' and Han Solo replies, 'I know,' I just like to hold my girl every time."

  • Gina M. LaPlaca, College, Class of '01
"It's not an oldie, but it's a goodie: 'Mask of Zorro.' I can't wait to pop it in when my military man comes back from overseas."

  • Daniel Doeschner, College, Class of '00
"'Sabrina' with Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford. Why? The actors are beautiful, the acting is beautiful, the movie is just beautiful."

  • Lauren Bialystok, College, Class of '02
"'Only You' - it's got schmaltz, it's got humor, it's got Robert Downey Jr., and it takes place in gorgeous Italian countryside."

  • Edward Lion, College, Class of '98
"'Shakespeare in Love' because my girlfriend dragged me to see it and because of my expectations, I wound up enjoying it even more than she did."

  • Victor Randolph V. Cinco, College, Class of '99
"Probably 'Clueless.' It's a great example of a guy with a big crush getting the girl at the end.

  • Julia Chan, College, Class of '02
"'Four Weddings and a Funeral.' I love touching romantic comedies. And Hugh Grant and Mr. Bean in the same movie? You can't get much better than that."

  • Stephen J. Erdman, Engineering, Class of '99
"'When Harry Met Sally' because it's witty and doesn't suck."

  • Brian Siano, OSC, Epidemiology
"'Truly, Madly, Deeply' and 'Sense and Sensibility.' Watch 'em. If I could explain why they're my favorite romantic movies, they'd cease being romantic."

  • David Schmid, Engineering, Class of '99
"'Full Metal Jacket.' Isn't it obvious?"

  • Mahesh Swaminathan, Engineering, Class of '99
"'When Harry Met Sally.' Or 'Love Story.' But that is only if you are talking about romance in the love or sappy sense."
