The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has elected a total of six outstanding scholars from the University this year. In addition to Professor of Philosophy Paul Guyer (Current, May 13), the academy elected the following for excellence in their fields.
- Clay M. Armstrong, M.D., professor of physiology, investigates the role of ionic channels in permeability of cell membranes;
- Dorothy L. Cheney, professor of biology, researches the communication and social behavior of non-human primates;
- Lila Gleitman, Ph.D., professor of psychology, studies psycholinguistics and language acquisition;
- Elihu Katz, Ph.D., professor of communication and director of the Annenberg Scholars Program, investigates how mass media affects social systems and the dynamics of public opinion;
- Jeremy A. Sabloff, Ph.D. (C'64), director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum and Term Professor of Anthropology is a leading authority on ancient Maya civilization.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an honorary society that recognizes achievement in the natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. (More honors)
