$20m for aid, more

George Weiss (W’65) has said yes to Penn again — in a big way.

Weiss’ Say Yes to Education foundation has donated $20 million to the University to enhance campus life, support faculty and strengthen financial aid.

Nearly one-third of the gift, or $6 million, will go to financial aid, including a $5 million challenge fund that will provide one dollar for every two new dollars raised.

At a Feb. 1 ceremony in which President Judith Rodin accepted the gift, Weiss explained that he wanted to encourage his fellow trustees to give and promote minority permanence with the challenge fund.

“If there’s anybody, especially a minority, who’s not coming to Penn because they can’t afford it, that’s a travesty,” he said.

The gift will also create Weiss House, a campus hub for innovative technologies for undergraduate students along the lines of Kelly Writers House; establish an endowed professorship; and provide support for campus athletic priorities.

Over the past 25 years, Weiss has given nearly $40 million to support various Penn programs.
