Aching backs, living wills… Ouch. Find out how to manage
Some of the issues of aging can be less painful with help from talks from Penn Partners in Healthy Living. Here’s some of what they have to offer on campus:
What’s New in Medicare? A representative of KEPRO, the agency that protects the rights of people on Medicare, will review new procedures and benefits and how Medicare recipients can choose the best HMO or other policy for them and prevent making mistakes about their coverage. Speaker Dale B. Fry, a KEPRO marketing specialist, will answer questions and speak to participants individually after the lecture.

Oh, My Aching Back: Dr. Curtis Slipman, director of The Spine Center, will explain the latest in treatment and therapy for back pain. Slipman will answer questions and speak to participants individually after the lecture.

Living Wills: Medical Considerations Dr. Horace DeLisser, a member of the Ethics Committee at the Hospital, will outline how doctors can work with families to ensure the most humane treatment for people in end-of-life circumstances. He will explain living wills and what people should consider in preparing one. DeLisser will answer questions and speak to participants individually after the lecture.

Living Wills and Powers of Attorney: Legal Considerations Sandra L. Chaff, a local attorney who works with end-of-life issues, will outline how doctors can work with families to insure that the wishes of an incapacitated person are respected and carried out. Chaff will explain how the living will works and the legal aspects people should consider in preparing one. She will answer questions and speak to participants individually after the lecture.

Electronic medical records help save lives of HIV patients
Wharton’s Leandro “Leo” Pongeluppe and colleagues found that HIV clinics in Malawi that switched from paper to electronic medical records saw an estimated 28% reduction in deaths in five years.
