Dock Street Brewing Co.

WHERE: This new brewpub is located at 701 S. 50th St., the corner of 50th St. and Baltimore Ave, in a former firehouse.

WHY GO?: Well for starters, there’s the quality beer, brewed on premises. And there’s the scrumptious pizza baked in a wood-fired oven. Plus, while it’s casual enough to be a neighborhood hangout, Dock Street also offers enough on the menu to make it worth the hike for those who live on the other side of town.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Why choose West Philly’s Cedar Park neighborhood? It was a natural fit for owner Rosemarie Certo, who loves the neighborhood’s diverse and politically active residents. Ideally, neighborhood activists hope, Dock Street will become a neighborhood destination, livening up a dark corner.

THE VIBE: The historic fire station—which most recently was home to a farmer’s market—houses the brewing facilities, as well as tables and a small bar. Be prepared to wait for a table. The floor is concrete and the walls are bare, except for a large chalkboard near the bar listing which beers are on tap and when they were brewed.

SO WHAT’S ON TAP?: A refreshing, crisp white ale (perfect for the summer) and a Rye IPA are the standouts. Dock Street also offers a hearty Double Bock in bottles, though it’s not available for carryout. Keep an eye out for seasonal brews and some unusual specialty selections. Wine drinkers, take note: Dock Street also offers Pennsylvania-only wines, including a merlot and pinot grigio from Chaddsford Winery.

SATISFY YOUR APPETITE: Walk around the bar, past the casually arranged couch and chairs, and you’ll see what makes the pizza at Dock Street so great: Firewood. The wood-firing process makes the crust light and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Pizzas range from the traditional (the Margherita offers plum tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, oregano and rosemary) to the unusual (the Flammenkuche is topped with caramelized onions, bacon, gruyere, crème fraiche and fresh thyme). There’s also plenty for vegetarians and vegans, including a pizza topped with artichokes, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, spinach and crème fraiche, and the vegan pesto with red peppers and onions. Pies run $6.25 to $8.75 for a small to $12.50 to $17.50 for a large. They also offer panini sandwiches, a variety of salads, and burgers (either veggie, chicken or beef).
