WHAT:“Process in Print” is a new exhibit of 30 master prints, dating from the early 20th century to the present, from the collection of David and Susan Goode.

WHERE: Arthur Ross Gallery, at the Fisher Fine Arts Library, 220 South 34th St.

WHEN: The exhibit opened earlier this month and runs through Nov. 2.

WHY IT’S WORTH A VISIT: Lynn Marsden-Atlass, director of the gallery, says this exhibit is unique because of its great variety. The show highlights numerous styles of printmaking—aquatint, etching, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, and screen prints—and artists including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Georges Braque, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jasper Johns and others.

THE SHOW: “It’s a collection of 20th century master prints, primarily American but with a few European works thrown in,” Marsden-Atlass says. “It’s a collection that’s been built over a period of about 30 years.”

ABOUT THE GOODES: “The title of this show, ‘Process in Print,’ is about what has been of interest to the Goodes for such a long time,” Marsden-Atlass says. “They’re fascinated by the process of printmaking and the variety of works you can create through printmaking. … Prints are both beautiful and affordable.”

VARIED INTERESTS: Marsden-Atlass says David Goode’s interests trend toward the figurative and realist—the Edward Hopper print, “The Locomotive,” from 1923 (above, top), is a good example—while Susan’s are broader, as represented by Robert Motherwell’s “Red Sea I” (bottom), from 1976. After David began the collection based around his interest in railroads, Susan went about expanding it. “They really complement each other,” Marsden-Atlass says.

A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING: “This is an important collection that spans a very broad period of time, from Hopper in 1923 up through major contemporary art figures like David Hockney and Jasper Jones and Roy Lichtenstein. You’ve got pop artists. … So you have a very wide range but a very important range. These are very unique prints.”

DATES OF INTEREST: Penn Print instructors Matt Neff and Ivanco Talevski will give a lecture at the show at 4 p.m. on Oct. 2. The Goodes, meanwhile, will talk about their interest in printmaking during Homecoming Weekend’s Gallery Hop. Their talk is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Oct. 31.
