Students preview the Penn experience at pre-orientation

For five days before Penn’s New Student Orientation begins, about 300 incoming freshman will get a sneak peak of the Penn experience through the University’s pre-orientation programs.

Penn Green (pictured at right), PennQuest, PennArts, PennCORP or PENNacle, these students have opted to immerse themselves in environmentalism, outdoor adventure and art, as well as community service and leadership.

PennGreen students will learn about sustainability at Penn and in Philadelphia. In addition to visiting a local urban farm and the Morris Arboretum, they will experience an ecological river tour by canoe.

PennQuest takes students on a hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail in the Poconos. The program is designed to help students build positive relationships and develop self-confidence.

The PennArts program introduces students to the many artistic offerings at Penn and the Philadelphia region. As part of the year’s program, students will work with several master artists and take a walking tour of the city’s murals.

PennCORP familiarizes students to community service on campus and in the city by introducing them to representatives from a wide range of agencies and organizations, and by holding discussions and activity sessions.

PENNacle will take members of the Class of 2014 on a three-day leadership retreat at the Diamond Ridge Conference Center in Jamison, Pa., where they will learn from upperclass students about group dynamics, leadership styles, team building and Penn traditions.

The pre-orientation programs kick off on Aug. 29. More information about pre-orientation at Penn is available at www.vpul.upenn.edu/osa/preprog.
